Day 4: A-E-I-O-U: Jay McLaughlin Teaches Modeltypeface an Exciting New Tip!
Well – it takes a lot to surprise me when it comes to modelling!
On our day of playing around with poses, lighting and handy tips, Jay said,
“Try this: mouth all the vowels of the alphabet. I read a model saying she did it once and I always wondered if it worked.”
So I did.
And it is AWESOME!
It’s a great way of moving your mouth in very subtle ways, giving slight variations and making you look more engaged. You can go big or small (the pics below are very, very slight) but ‘A’ ‘I’ worked particularly well as a SHOUT!
I know it’s very subtle, but can you see the variations? So ‘E’ would work for a fun, preppy beauty shoot, whereas ‘U’ is a bit moodier and would be great for a full-length, haute-couture style shot.
As I said before, you can really go OTT – especially with ‘O’ for a shocked face! It’s a great way of keeping your expression fresh, getting a movement in your lips and pouting them in a natural way.
Thanks for the handy tip, Jay!
